Personality Styling....
Personality Styling… how to modernise the creative.
Fashion is a form of self-expression, with each individual having a unique personality which is outwardly expressed through what they wear.
As a stylist it is important to embrace a client’s individuality and uniqueness, working with them to elevate their style without losing the true essence of who they are. In stylist terms, we call this one’s personality… (real original right!) It can be challenging for those who have a personality that doesn’t reflect modern fashion trends as this can push them into a dramatic personality, running the risk of looking like they have just stepped off the set of a periodic movie.
So just before I begin running you through how I styled my client…. a creative personality….
Here’s a stylist tip that I live by when personality is my focus.
***Always embrace your personality, it is what sets you a part in a world where just about everyone is dressed like a clone of social media influencers…but in saying this, your looks must be wearable which can be achieved by simply incorporating modern basic pieces into every ensemble.
Now back to my client…
My client is a male in his early 30’s, a musician/school teacher with a creative personality. During our consultation we discussed how he could wear his much-loved, but difficult to style creative pieces…today it’s all about a bowler hat with feather detail and a plaid blazer in wonderful burnt orange and chocolate tones… his only brief was the look needed to be “classic British men’s fashion” while keeping it a look that he will feel comfortable in for today’s style.
So, with the personality pieces already supplied courtesy of his existing wardrobe, I practiced what I preached in the stylist tip above and turned my attention to finding classic closet staples.
First on the list was a staple pair of jeans… for the perfect fit we went to nudie jeans co where they offer modern styles, high quality and a life-time of repairs (we always support brands that are working towards a sustainable fashion future!). As my client is of medium to tall height and lean a relaxed skinny fit jean works perfectly to further elongate the leg while staying on trend.
Next, a dressy/casual/creative shirt… we went to the shirt specialist Ted Baker and selected a design with a small repetitive floral print. As my client is creative and loves detail, this pattern is perfect for his personality while not being too complex, taking the stress out of styling. A dressy casual shirt is a must in all men’s wardrobes as it can transitions from work-to-weekend with ease… style buttoned up for workwear or simple style a white t-shirt underneath, keep the shirt undone for a layered relaxed look.
Lastly we focused on upgrading his fashion accessories… a new belt and simple sleek desert boots, the prefect contemporary upgrades that can be styled with just about every outfit while working perfectly with this look… remember gentleman, your shoes are the first thing that a lady looks at, so make it count!
*** Stylist tip, when selecting accessories a simplistic design will always be your easiest option to style, especially if you are incorporating creative pieces… also consider the colourway of your existing wardrobe and match your accessories to suit.
And that’s it…. 4 pieces added to my client’s wardrobe that will allow him to style his hat and plaid jacket with confidence, giving him the creative look that he likes so much while keeping him in touch with today’s styling….
P.S….While working with our client we quickly discovered that he had quite a large collection of unique pieces that he had collected over the years but he has always found them a little difficult to style into his everyday wardrobe, so our next step with this client is to go back to the start and make sure he has adequate basics! The key to every ones wardrobe….
