Behind the scenes…… creating a unique Derby Day outfit.
Black and white is challenging for me as a stylist, as I personally have a spring colour palette with a romantic personality. Neither says, lets style an outfit in black and white. However my model falls into a cool season colour palette with a contemporary/modern personality. An absolutely perfect match for black and white. So I push my inner self aside and focus on my character and the event. The thought process starts…..
The first piece of clothing selected is a blazer dress, however it’s not quite long enough …..a visit to a haberdashery store is needed. A lustrous white fringing to add the extra length we need and a length of black lace to be used as a belt are found, both instantly exciting my creative side. The addition of flirty fringing, from the 1920’s flapper dress and a touch of elegance from the 16th century, works perfectly with the oh-so-now blazer dress.
Out comes my needle and thread….. fringe attached, length is now perfect, neither to short nor too long. The addition of a few pearls (real by the way) to the lace, creates a very elegant belt which will soften the style nicely.
A chic white hat and black clutch with a touch of white are selected. As this style is minimal it allows us to use jewellery to elevate and complete. So we layer on the jewels and even more jewels. Starting with, long onyx earrings to frame the face, a very long onyx necklace with pearls dotted throughout, capturing a little bit of the 1920’s flapper style, an onyx and pearl bracelet. Finishing with a very contemporary black diamond ring in white metal.
All elements coming together creatively, modernising Derby Day….. in a reimagined style.
Stylist note- If you have a warmer colour palette, you may feel black and white doesn’t work as well for you as other colours do. An easy fix is to simply add a pair of lustrous pearl earrings. Choose a pair in white with a creamy or pinkish overtone. They will bring back the all-important warmth to your face, giving you a radiant glow.
